Emergency rally tomorrow over fire-and-rehire at Richmond upon Thames College

Please join our emergency rally at Richmond upon Thames College tomorrow (Tuesday 28 June) at 4pm where UCU members will be picketing the college over plans to 'fire and rehire' teaching staff and make them reapply for their jobs on worse terms and conditions.

Please come down and show your support tomorrow at 4pm at 'Marsh Farm Lane' (not road) where it intersects with Langhorn Drive and the carparks.

Spread the word using the hashtag #RichmondFireAndRehire tagging the main UCU account @ucu, the local branch @UCU_RuTC and the college @RuT_College.

Please also send messages of solidarity to the branch via the local UCU officers Lucy Corr and Caroline King.

Transport union RMT responds to stark and damning IPCC climate report

TRANSPORT Union RMT today responded to a stark and damning report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calling on the Government to wake up to the reality we are now living in and to take urgent and stringent action in the fight against climate change with a historic investment in public transport.

That urgent action is required in order to make rapid cuts to UK emissions and show the world that, as hosts of the vital COP26 climate talks, we can lead the way in the fight against catastrophic climate breakdown.

The IPCC report shows “the role of human influence on the climate system is undisputed” but that “stabilising the climate will require strong, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and reaching net zero CO2 emissions.”

RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch said:

“This report is terrifying in its detail but also shows that with political will and investment, the Government can still make a difference.

"RMT is calling on the Government to wake-up to the stark reality we are facing and think again about its damaging cuts agenda on our railways and instead draw up a blueprint for a historic and unprecedented investment in public transport now.

" This report shows the urgent need to rapidly cut emissions from the transport sector and that the best way to do this is to invest in a publicly owned transport network supporting good green jobs across all forms of public transport.”

RMT launch 3 days of national train strike action

Rail union RMT launch 3 days of national strike action across the railway network.

Over 50,000 railway workers will walkout as part of 3 days of national strike action later this month, in the biggest dispute on the network since 1989.

The union will shut down the country's railway network on 21st, 23rd and 25th June, due to the inability of the rail employers to come to a negotiated settlement with RMT.

Network Rail and the train operating companies have subjected their staff to multiyear pay freezes and plan to cut thousands of jobs which will make the railways unsafe.

Despite intense talks with the rail bosses, RMT has not been able to secure a pay proposal nor a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies.

In a separate dispute over pensions and job losses, London Underground RMT members will take strike action on June 21st.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: "Railway workers have been treated appallingly and despite our best efforts in negotiations, the rail industry with the support of the government has failed to take their concerns seriously.

"We have a cost-of-living crisis, and it is unacceptable for railway workers to either lose their jobs or face another year of a pay freeze when inflation is at 11.1pc and rising.

"Our union will now embark on a sustained campaign of industrial action which will shut down the railway system.

"Rail companies are making at least £500m a year in profits, whilst fat cat rail bosses have been paid millions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This unfairness is fuelling our members anger and their determination to win a fair settlement.

"RMT is open to meaningful negotiations with rail bosses and ministers, but they will need to come up with new proposals to prevent months of disruption on our railways."

On June 21st, over 50,000 railway workers will walk out. This includes Network Rail, 13 train operating companies and London Underground.

On June 23rd and 25th, up to 40,000 workers will walk out. This includes Network Rail and 13 train operating companies.

The action by RMT will affect the national railway network for the entire week where the 3 days of action have been called.
